After working in the industry for over 3 years in India, Apurva joined Tech for his MS in Mechanical Engineering in Spring 2015. He started his PhD research in wind turbines in Summer 2017. He regularly plays badminton, tennis & table tennis, and is passionate about Sailing. Oh, and he’s crazy about anything aviation!
The GSG President chairs meetings and works as GSG’s liaison with the Michigan Tech administration.
Daniel Byrne

Daniel is a PhD student in computer science. He works on memory management in cloud applications. He is passionate about improving the quality of life for graduate students through health and transportation.
The Vice-president assumes the duties of the President in his/her absence at any GSG or Executive Board meetings; serves as liaison with the standing committee chairs; and is the administrator of the First Contact program.
Ranit Karmakar

Ranit is a PhD student in Computer Engineering. He is working on developing a mobile application to detect corneal diseases. He is involved in multiple student organizations on campus and focuses on improving the lives of graduate students and their families. His hobbies include reading, writing, photography and playing guitar.
The Secretary records and prepares minutes for all GSG meetings; maintains the Constitution and Bylaws, including any amendments; maintains member and committee rosters; coordinates the poster-board rentals; and oversees yearly elections.
Bethel Tarekegne

Bethel is currently pursuing her PhD in Environmental and Energy Policy. She is excited to be representing and serving graduate students here at Tech by providing opportunities that enhance academic and personal development. She is an energy enthusiast, nature-loving, and fitness conscious.
The treasurer maintains all income, disbursements, and financial records of the GSG; plans the coming year’s budget in conjunction with the Executive Board; provides monthly financial status reports to the Executive Board and to GSG; manages committee-related expenditures, providing monthly reports to committee chairs.
Nathan Ford
Research Chair

Nathan is a 4th year PhD student in Mechanical Engineering. His research focuses on time-of-flight mass spectrometry of electrospray thrusters. Outside of GSG his hobbies include tabletop games, reading, and running.
The Research Chair is responsible for organizing the major research events on campus. These include the Graduate Research Colloquium, the 3 Minute Thesis Competition, the Merit Awards Program, and more.
Ami Kling
Professional Development Chair

Ami is a biomedical engineering PhD student. Her research interests include medical tissue characterization, diagnostic imaging, bio-optics/photonics, and elastography techniques.
The Professional Development Chair is responsible for organizing and running the standing seminar program. They organize the Academic Seminar series and the Professional Development series in conjunction with the Graduate School.
Wesley McGowan
Social Chair

Wesley first came to Tech from Atlanta, GA in 2006 for his B.S. in Computer Networking and System Administration and 2013 for a M.S. in Medical Informatics. Now he is back for his second M.S. in Data Science in the CS department. (Who knows he may get his PhD)
The Social Chair helps build a sense of community among graduate students by organizing social events each semester; assists the vice-president as necessary with Fall and Spring orientation; organizes the Graduate Student Orientation Picnic; and works with other committees, as requested, with the social aspects of workshops, such as catering and reservations.
Marina Choy
Public Relations Chair

Marina is a third year PhD student in the Rhetoric, Theory and Culture program. She is interested in critical theory, qualitative research and cultural studies. Shes love traveling, learning languages and meeting different people.
The Public Relations Chair promotes awareness of GSG in the University community by crafting publicity materials in a variety of communications media, especially the GSG website, and responds to requests for general information from the graduate student body at large
